A UNESCO World Heritage site - the world’s largest wetland – about 210,000 Km2. A little under half of this is in Bolivia and Paraguay; the rest is in Brazil, in the states of Mato Grosso and Mato Grosso do Sul. The Pantanal is one of the world’s great wildlife areas: an amazing diversity of birds, caimans, capybara, anteaters, otters, and jaguars, among others. It’s known as the place to see jaguars, or perhaps better described as the place where you are least unlikely to see them. We hoped to do so, while being well aware of the probability that we would not.

Un sitio del patrimonio mundial de la UNESCO - humedal
más grande del mundo - cerca de 210.000 Km2. Un poco menos de la
mitad de esto es en Bolivia y Paraguay; el resto se encuentra en Brasil, en los
estados de Mato Grosso y Mato Grosso do Sul. El Pantanal es una de las grandes
áreas de vida silvestre en el mundo: una increíble diversidad de aves,
caimanes, chiguiros, osos hormigueros, nutrias, y jaguares, entre otros. Se le
conoce como el lugar para ver jaguares, o tal vez mejor descrito como el lugar
donde se encuentre menos improbable que verlos. Teníamos la esperanza de

We had been planning to visit the Pantanal ever since our trip around
South America (www. http://suramericacontraelreloj.blogspot.com), when we had
decided that the time needed to get there and back, as well as to appreciate
the area, was going to eat up too much of our three months in Brazil. We had
then planned a visit last year, however plans changed, and finally we made it
in July 2015.
Habíamos estado planeando visitar el Pantanal desde
entonces nuestro viaje alrededor de América del Sur (www.
Http://suramericacontraelreloj.blogspot.com), cuando habíamos decidido que el
tiempo necesario para llegar allí y de regreso, así como para apreciar la zona
, iba a comer demasiado de nuestros tres meses en Brasil. Entonces nos habíamos
planeado una visita el año pasado, sin embargo los planes cambiaron, y
finalmente lo hizo en julio de 2015.
We travelled from Bogotá to Rio de Janeiro, then on to Cuiabá, meeting
our guide Julinho in the morning of our third day of travel. We had been in
touch with him for a year, setting up our trip, and finally met at the
beginning of our week in the Pantanal. We headed southwards to our first stop –
Pouso Alegre. We were lucky enough to encounter a Giant Anteater on the way,
and spent half an hour in awe of this great mammal, which we had hoped to see
elsewhere in South America, without success.
Viajamos desde Bogotá a Río de Janeiro, luego a Cuiabá, encontrando
nuestra guía Julinho en la mañana de nuestro tercer día de viaje. Habíamos
estado en contacto con él durante un año, planeando nuestro viaje, y,
finalmente, se reunió a principios de la semana en el Pantanal. Nos dirigimos
hacia el sur hasta nuestra primera parada - Pouso Alegre. Tuvimos la suerte de
encontrarse con un oso hormiguero gigante en el camino, y pasamos una media
hora con este gran mamífero, que habíamos esperado ver en el resto de
Sudamérica, sin éxito.
The birds around Pouso Alegre were a pleasure to see: lots of variety,
and in particular we liked the different Toucans. In addition, there is a rich
population of caimans, capybara, fox, and bush deer, among others.
Las aves alrededor de Pouso Alegre eran un placer ver:
mucha variedad, y en particular nos gustó las distintas tucanes. Además, hay
una rica población de caimanes, chiguiros, zorros, y ciervos, entre otros.
We enjoyed three hours on horseback, exploring the area around the lodge.
Disfrutamos tres horas a caballo, explorando el área
alrededor de la casa de campo.
After two nights at Pouso Alegre, we headed further south into the
Pantanal, to Porto Jofre, on the River Cuiabá. We were there four nights, and
each day spent the day on the rivers and channels. On arrival we spent our
first afternoon on the river and were able to spend an hour watching a jaguar
on the river bank; initially lazing in the sun, and then, on the arrival of
more watchers, playing hide-and-seek along the river bank, once most of them
had disappeared again.
Después de dos noches en Pouso Alegre, nos dirigimos más
al sur en el Pantanal, a Porto Jofre, en el río Cuiabá. Estuvimos allí cuatro
noches, y cada día pasamos el día en los ríos y canales. A la llegada nos
pasamos nuestra primera tarde en el río y pudimos pasar una hora viendo un
jaguar en la orilla del río; inicialmente tomando el sol, y luego, en la
llegada de más observadores, jugando al escondite a lo largo de la orilla del
río, una vez que la mayoría de ellos había desaparecido de nuevo.
Over the next four days, we spent most of our time on the water, enjoying
sightings of three more jaguars, giant otters (up to eight in a group),
neotropical otter, howler and capuchin monkeys, bats, piranha, caiman… along
with an amazing variety of bird life.
Durante los próximos cuatro días, nos pasamos la mayoría
de nuestro tiempo al agua, disfrutando tres jaguares más, nutrias gigantes
(hasta ocho en un grupo), nutria neotropical, monos aulladores y capuchinos,
murciélagos, pirañas, caimanes ... junto con una increíble variedad de aves.
In addition to time on the water we enjoyed swimming in the river; a
refreshing dip at the end of the day, among the piranha and caiman.
Además de tiempo al agua disfrutamos nadando en el río;
un refrescante chapuzón en el final del día, entre las pirañas y caimanes.
On our last day we headed back north on the Transpantaneira to Cuiabá to
head back to Rio for a brief break before heading home.
En el último día nos dirigimos de nuevo hacia el norte
por la Transpantaneira a Cuiabá para regresar a Río por un breve descanso antes
de regresar a casa.
Our visit revealed the natural splendour which we had hoped to see and
which was well worth the anticipation. Julinho’s knowledge of the area’s
wildlife is encyclopaedic, his knowledge of the area provides access not only
to the physical environment but also to the people and their concerns, and his
ability to manage time is impressive, so that we always felt unhurried, with
lots of time to appreciate the diversity of flora and fauna which this area
still offers.
Nuestra visita reveló el esplendor natural que esperábamos ver y que era bien vale la anticipación. Conocimiento de Julinho de la fauna de la zona es enciclopédica, su conocimiento de la zona da acceso no sólo al entorno físico, sino también a las personas y sus preocupaciones y su habilidad para administrar el tiempo es impresionante, por lo que siempre nos sentimos sin prisas, con un montón de tiempo para apreciar la diversidad de flora y fauna que esta zona todavía ofrece.
